It happens to the best of us. Having a bad day, week, or even month is completely normal, especially in the workplace. Often times, the smallest incident can make us feel discouraged or unmotivated, only to create the mindset of wanting to “just get by.” Regardless of how long you may be feeling this way, it becomes easier to fall into negative patterns, rather than actively taking the necessary steps in changing an overall outcome. Whether your bad days sparked from a personal situation in your life, or because of an incident at work, there are several things to consider before you give up. Here are 5 things you can do to strive toward being the high-performer you always knew you could be, even on your bad days.
1. Change your perspective
Perspective is key. How many times have you put yourself in a situation where something may not go as planned, and to make yourself feel better you think, “It could be worse, right?” This is our mind’s way of rationalizing a situation, allowing us to understand that it’s not the end of the world. Unfortunately, this thought can be rare. Instead of shifting your perspective, you might find yourself taking all of the blame, creating a miserable cycle of negativity anytime you don’t have a great day. We are all capable of changing our perspective even if it seems difficult at times. Rather than feeling discouraged about a situation, look at it from a different point of view. The options are endless when it comes to perspective and being able to shift it is a helpful way to learn from mistakes. After all, negative emotions are normal, but they don’t have to be permanent.
2. Don’t avoid problems
Avoiding problems is very similar to taking the easy way out. Only these problems never really go away unless you properly confront them. In fact, they often grow. Constantly ignoring the areas in your life that you find fault with can really take a toll on future performance. Think about it this way – What are you gaining from avoiding the things that have clearly taken a toll on you? How is it benefiting you? When you choose to face your problems head on, you’ve already taken a huge step in personal evolvement that you can carry on into the workplace. Things do not change if they are ignored. When you learn to make the most out of the current situation you are in, you then learn to be open and honest within yourself.
3. Discover opportunity
When we’re feeling stuck, sometimes the last thing we think to do is search for different opportunities. Opportunity however, can be the start of growth. The future of work is shifting from filling gaps in jobs to unlocking unseen potential. Being able to transition both in your personal life and in your work life, forces you to break the patterns that may be holding you back. When you become too comfortable in a routine, there is little to no room for growth and development, and your bad days may start aligning with your routine days. Instead, try pushing yourself to open the door for greater fulfillment. This may feel like a trial and error game, or it may be the start of a whole new motivation you never knew you had. Start by taking small steps out of your comfort zone and be open to the things you may not be familiar with. You never know what one small opportunity can lead to. And remember, you always have choices, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.
4. Look at the big picture
While it is important to actively search for new opportunity, it is also very helpful to take a step back to review and assess the current situation you are in. When you take the time to think and write down everything that has led up to where you are now, you’re able to identify things in a clearer way. Ask yourself, “What role have I played in this situation?” “Where do I want to be and how do I get there?” This is the time to essentially check in with yourself and figure out what you want your end goal to be and the steps you need to take to succeed. You are in charge of paving your own path toward success, and if review and assessment is not done, it is nearly impossible to create a clear vision. Even on your worst day, you have the future to look forward to.
5. Integrate Positivity
Now, this may sound like a simple task, however it is very easy to become distracted by emotion on your bad days. There is also no right or wrong way to uncover positivity, and it can vary based on the situation. When things get tough, start by accepting that perfection is impossible. Sometimes the best way to implement positivity is to take time for yourself each day to do something you love. Find the light in difficult situations, take things day by day and capture value in return. When you do this, people will begin to recognize that you are ultimately making the choice to put positivity on a pedestal. You may even start a new workplace trend.
Overall, some days we feel on top of the world, ready to tackle anything that comes our way. On other days, we lack intention and motivation and fall short of our goals. Being a high performer looks different for everyone, and while there isn’t a perfect way to measure a great performer, there are always ways to become a better one. Taking everything into account, the choice is yours. Even the highest performers have bad days, but how they choose to manage these days is what makes all the difference. This shift can be powerful, not only for us as individuals, but the potential impact can change the dynamic of those around us.
